5 Ideas for Intimate Couple Photographs

You’ve likely got a lot of ‘couple photographs’ on your Facebook page. During Valentine's, however, it’s a good idea to push the boat out a little. 

We’re not talking about off-the-cusp photographs that you and your SO took on a night out or the slightly embarrassing selfies taken during a quiet night in. 

We’re talking about carefully orchestrated photographs that would shine on your Facebook page and be good enough for a Facebook photo book. Valentine's Day is, after all, an excuse to celebrate your love. So what better way to celebrate than with a beautiful, intimate photo shoot that shows your love in its best light?

To help you out with these photographs, we’ve listed a few of our favourite couple photography ideas below, along with a few tips on how to pull them off. 

Intimate But Comfortable

One of the best ideas for a couple photograph is actually the most simple. It’s just you and your SO holding each other close and looking toward the camera. You can mix it up of course. You can make it playful by jumping on your SO’s back and making it a ‘piggyback’ photograph, or you can make it more intimate by giving your SO a kiss on the lips. It’s really up to you and how you feel on the day. 

The only problem is that you’ve got to get someone to take the photograph. Some couples might find this a little awkward, but the naturalism and subtlety inherent in an ‘intimate but comfortable’ photography session easily make the initial awkwardness worth it. You’ve just got to find a friend or loved one who is willing, and you’re away!

City Exploration

If you’re looking for something with a bit more oomph, we’d suggest going on a quick city tour. One of the best things about being in a relationship is having someone to explore the world with, so why not demonstrate that with some exploration photographs with a touch of intimacy? Once again, you will need a friend or family member to come along with you. Get them to snap some natural exploration photographs – either facing or with your back to the camera – as well as a few orchestrated photographs in a particularly stunning part of the city.

Sunset Silhouettes

Another good idea for a couple photoshoot is to do it in front of a beautiful, roaring sunset. If you’re looking for a showstopper photograph to upload to our photo book maker, this is probably your best bet, but it does require a bit of planning. 

First off, you need to be aware of sunset times and make sure you check the weather. You also need to find the perfect spot to take the photograph, and then ensure your smartphone settings are optimised to capture the sunset – using HDR mode to improve exposure and using burst mode to give yourself the best chance of a perfect snap. There are a few different poses you can try, too. You can simply stand there and stare off into the sunset, or you can hold your SO in a close embrace, or you can make it playful by jumping into the air while holding hands. Once again, it’s up to you!

In the Bed (Don’t Panic!)

You may have read this subheading and begun to sweat a little, but we would urge you not to panic. Bed photoshoots don’t have to be anything sexual. In relationships, the bed is actually a symbol of intimacy, comfort, and security, and that’s why it’s become a classic among couple photographs. All you have to do is lay there with your SO, place your hand on their neck or cheek, the other on their waist or hip, and then stare lovingly into their eyes. 

Close-Up Symbols

Lastly, if you’re not much of a poser, couple photographs don’t have to be so on-the-nose. In some of the most special couple photography shots, you can't see the couples’ faces at all. Instead, you see their hands holding each other tight, or two pairs of feet walking barefoot through the grass. These are symbolic shots that can demonstrate your close bond, without having to pose for the camera.

If you’ve made this Valentine’s Day particularly special – for instance, you’ve popped the question! – then you can even take a close-up, black-and-white shot of the ring. Get creative with it, try to think outside the box, and the chances are you’ll come away with something beautiful. It’s your love that’s on show, after all, not your photography skills!
